TEA releases new guidelines on school re-openings

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) today released its most recent guidelines regarding schools across the state reopening. According to the new guidelines, parents have the choice of either sending their kids to the school in person or allowing them to stay at home and learn online.

The agency’s two new learning methods are remote synchronous instruction and remote asynchronous. In other words, students can learn either on campus or through a self-guided curriculum. Synchronous instruction requires all students and the teacher of a class to be virtually present at the same time, while asynchronous instruction allows students to learn at their own pace but must be deemed an “engaged” learner.

For those opting to learn in the classroom, personal protective equipment such as masks, hand sanitizer and gloves will be provided to the 75,000-plus campuses by mid-July or early-August.

With TEA’s new guidelines, taking attendance will not affect school funding and providing instructional support both in-person and remotely will be heavily emphasized.

The guidelines will be in effect for the 2020-21 school year.
