The rapid spread of the coronavirus around the country has left many health care workers scrambling to get the protective equipment they need. And while locals have stepped up by sewing and donating masks to local medical professionals, one Sam Rayburn ISD teacher has found another way to help those on the front lines.

“In March, Daryl Dorris, our Fifth Grade Science Teacher, received a highly anticipated 3D printer for his classroom,” said the school. “Unfortunately, due to our current school closure, it didn’t look like he was going to get to use it anytime soon.”

That’s when Dorris came up with another way to utilize the 3D printer and help those working on the front lines of COVID-19.

“He heard of a need for surgical mask ear guards for health care workers and got right to work with the 3D printer.”

The design connects the straps from the mask and elevates them to the back of the head. This way they no longer rub against the wearer’s ears and head in a painful way.

The school said to date, Mr. Dorris has donated 20 of them to TMC Bonham.

“Thank you Mr. Dorris for reaching out to our community and helping healthcare providers! We are so proud to have you as part of our SRISD Family.”
