Police are warning citizens of a new COVID-19 phone scam involving text messages being sent to cell phones.

On Wednesday, the Gun Barrel City Police Department posted a photo of a text message to Facebook warning people to not click the link in the text.

“Texts, like the one shown, are going out saying you have been exposed to COVID-19 along with a link for you to get more information. With all the news coverage of the virus, and a realistic looking text, you might be tempted to click this link,” said the department.

However, they say scammers are playing on your fear and this is exactly what they want you to do.

“If you get this text, it is a scam – DO NOT click on the link in the text message.”

The Better Business Bureau is also alerting people about text messages that claim to be from a governmental agency trying to get you to click a link to take an “online coronavirus test.”
