2022 will be a momentous year for the Bois d’Arc Lake project. In the past four years, we’ve gone from final construction permit approval and groundbreaking to being close to opening and operating a reservoir with all the complex infrastructure required to deliver water to our North Texas communities.
Final work on the lake is close to completion, including connection of the dam and spillway to the electric grid expected soon. The raw water pipeline installation is finished, and teams have installed about 85% of the treated water pipeline. We expect the remaining pipeline work to be done in the second quarter. The Leonard Water Treatment Plant has been undergoing testing of its facilities for a few months with the goal of being ready to treat and deliver water to drink and use by this summer.
This is an inspirational and historic milestone both for North Texas Municipal Water District and our entire region. Bois d’Arc Lake will provide the vital water supplies needed for our rapidly growing service area at a critical time to meet current and future needs. Once in operation, the new water treatment plant and pipeline will expand our capabilities to serve more than 2 million people in our region with clean, reliable water for decades to come. When the lake is ready and safe to open for recreation, it will also offer new opportunities for fishing, boating and nature viewing.
As we look toward celebrating some of these major achievements, it’s important to recognize the many partners we have worked and collaborated with along the way. We are especially grateful for the coordination and support of the Texas Water Development Board, Fannin County, the City of Bonham, Texas Parks & Wildlife, Fannin County Sheriff’s Office and the numerous community members who have been part of this extensive project. Together with our Board of Directors, Member Cities and Customers, project staff and hundreds of skilled workers, we anticipate this project to finish on time and within budget.
During the coming year, we will share the success stories from those who worked hard to make this project a reality. We look forward to 2022 as a year of culmination and commemoration as we enter the home stretch of this historic project, which has been so many decades in the making. Now, it’s Mother Nature’s turn to bring the rainfall needed and fill Bois d’Arc Lake.
