The Korean automaker is telling 380,000 Kia owners to park the vehicle outdoors until a potential fire hazard in the engine’s compartment is fixed.
The company is recalling select Sportage SUVs from 2017 to 2021 and Cadenza sedans from 2017 to 2019. They say a short circuit in the vehicles’ electronic brake unit may cause excessive current leading to a potential fire. The vehicles being recalled, according to Kia, do not come equipped with Kia’s Smart Cruise Control system, and the tire pressure, anti-lock brake or other warning lights may be seen prior to the problem’s occurrence.
Starting April 30, the automaker plans to start letting owners know and they will replace fuses in the vehicles.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Kias and Hyundais have reported more than 6 million vehicles experiencing engine failure or fires.
