The Bonham Police Departmentis alerting citizens to a current IRSscam that has popped up recently.

“We have talked to many citizens today reporting having received alarming phone calls and text messages allegedly from the IRS concerning the citizen’s social security number,” they posted to their social media platforms. “Please don’t fall victim to this scam.”

They said most of the calls they received Tuesday, Aug. 11 are showing a local number starting with “903-449-####”. These numbers are computer-generated even though they appear to be local, this is done to trick us into answering them.

The scammers are also stating that “the police are on the way with a warrant to arrest you,”be aware this is a scare tactic.

Remember if the IRS needs to contact you they would do so through the US Postal Service. Anyone who receives a call is urged to NOT PRESS “1”, DO NOT verify your identity, and DO NOT give them ANY of your information.

If you find yourself victim to phone scams, ensure that you contact your local law enforcement agency for further help and information.
