This past Saturday, George P. Bush, chairman of the Veterans Land Board, announced that Bonham resident Jesus Holguin will celebrate his 101st birthday on Thursday, Aug 6.
Holguin, an Army Veteran, currently resides at the Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home in Fannin County.
“It’s not every day that a veteran turns 101 years old,” said Bushman in a statement.
On Feb. 21,1942, Jesus Holguin enlisted into the United States Army at the age of 22 and served with the 1st Company 35th Infantry.
Holguin served as a rifleman on Guadalcanal, Northern Solomon Islands, and Luzon. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 29,1945. His decorations and citations included the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal.
Holguin was born in Anthony, Texas on August 6, 1919. He is one of six children, which included two sisters and three brothers. Holguin’s brothers all served in WWII. After leaving the Army, Holguin returned to Anthony, Texas andmarried Julieta Frequez (deceased). They had one son, Jesus Jr., and one daughter, Gracie.
Holguin has been a resident of the Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home since June 2019.
