IRS advises taxes need to be filed by July 15

Earlier this year, the IRS extended the tax season deadline due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but that deadline is July 15, and they said they would not extend it again.

“The IRS understands that those affected by the coronavirus may not be able to pay their balances in full by July 15, but we have many payment options to help taxpayers,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig in a statement. “These easy-to-use payment options are available on IRS.gov, and most can be done automatically without reaching out to an IRS representative.”

To avoid any penalties for taxes owing, the IRS is actively encouraging people to start looking at payment options now or if you can pay in full.

Anyone needing an extension through Oct. 15 can do so by including a Form 4868 with their 1040. However, the IRS warns the extension is just for filing your tax return. Any taxes owed to the government are still due no later than the July 15, cutoff.
