Double meteor shower to begin Tuesday night

After stargazers had the pleasure of viewing Comet NEOWISE, the Delta Aquarids and Alpha Capricornids meteor showers are expected to coincide in their peaks across the night sky Tuesday night and will last into the early morning hours on Wednesday.

Those viewing the showers can expect around 20 to 25 meteors an hour. The Delta Aquarids meteor shower should last until mid-August. The meteors in these showers usually have long, glowing trails due to the angle they enter the earth’s atmosphere. Meteors in the Alpha Capricornids showers typically are at their peak in late July and have the appearance of bright fireballs. These showers produce around five meteors or less per hour.

Those planning to view the showers should avoid night skies in larger cities with light pollution. Instead, it is recommended to find a more remote area with minimal light pollution. Instead of using binoculars or a telescope, it is advised to view the showers with your own eye and to wait at least 30 minutes to allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness. Most viewers can expect to see the showers by Wednesday at midnight.
