Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback Dak Prescott helped lead his team to a key win over division rival New York Giants. However, a gruesome ankle injury forced Prescott to exit the game in the third quarter of the 37-34 win in Arlington. The team said Prescott suffered both a compound fracture and a dislocation of his right ankle on a designed quarterback run. At that point in the game, Dallas held a 24-23 lead about halfway through the third quarter deep in Giants’ territory.
Prescott, 27, will likely be placed on injured reserve and see his season come to an end. Before his gruesome ankle injury on Sunday, Prescott never appeared on the team’s injury report as the Cowboys’ signal-caller. ESPN reported that Prescott underwent successful surgery to repair his injured ankle Sunday evening.
Prescott was off to a torrid pace to open the 2020 NFL season. In a little more than four and a half games, Prescott completed 68 percent of his 222 pass attempts. Prescott tossed 9 touchdowns and 4 interceptions to go with his 1,856 aerial yards. The dual-threat quarterback also had 18 totes for 93 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. He also caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Cerdick Wilson late in the second quarter against the Giants.
Veteran backup quarterback Andy Dalton took over behind center for Dallas when Prescott went down. Dalton helped Dallas finish off the scoring drive Prescott started. The ex-Bengals quarterback completed a key 38-yard pass to wideout Michael Gallup late in the fourth quarter. The completion helped set up Greg Zuerlein’s game-winning 34-yard field goal.
Dalton signed a 1-year, $3-million deal with Dallas in the offseason, and could be worth up to $7 million in incentives. For more sports coverage, click here.
