Gov. Greg Abbott and State Sen. Bryan Hughes are working together to introduce a bill addressing what Texans can do when social media accounts are banned by companies like Facebook and Twitter.
“We are working with Sen. Hughes on legislation to prevent social media providers like Facebook & Twitter from canceling conservative speech,” Abbott said on social media.
During an interview on Inside Texas Politics, Hughes said federal law allows them to regulate big-tech companies like Twitter and Facebook.
“ … so the bill we’re getting ready to file will say that if a company discriminates against you, if the platforms blocks or kicks you off based on your viewpoint, based on your politics or religion based on viewpoint discrimination, it will give you a way to get back online,” Hughes said during the interview.
Hughes continued to say they want to ensure Texans who are discriminated against have the option to take action.
“We think that will get Facebook’s attention, get Twitter’s attention, and cause them to start treating Texans fairly,” he said.
