Sam Rayburn ISD has taken its first step toward creating its own police department.
The school announced on Friday, Sgt. James Woods with the Bonham Police Department as the future Chief of Police of the Sam Rayburn ISD Police Department.
“We are excited for Officer Woods to join SRISD and provide a level of safety for all students and staff beyond what has previously been experienced,” said superintendent Dr. Cole McClendon.
Woods, who is based in Honey Grove, has an extensive law enforcement career which includes serving as Chief Deputy of the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office.
“I have dedicated my career to public service. I hope to develop an understanding with the students, parents, and staff that the safety and security of Sam Rayburn ISD is my number one priority. Behind every success is a team of collaborators, workers, and supporters,” he said.
Woods said he believes it is important to nurture the relationship between law enforcement and children.
“Building a positive relationship at a young age can have a tremendous influence on any interaction they may have with law enforcement throughout their lifetime. I believe Sam Rayburn ISD has invested in a staff that truly strives to support their students in all their endeavors, with their educational development at the forefront. Being a member of this team is an opportunity that any law enforcement professional would be proud of.”
“As with any law enforcement agency, we will continually monitor the demands placed on the department and work closely with the School Board to develop a plan to meet these demands. It is my goal to meet all guidelines of TCOLE and have the department operational before the 2020-2021 school year begins in August.”
McClendon said that Woods will be sworn in for the 2020-2021 school year until then he holds the title of Director of Safety as SRISD completes the application process to the state for police department formation approval.
“I believe our Sam Rayburn team, working together, with the common goal of protecting our students, will be a force to be reckoned with. I intend to work closely with Dr. McClendon and the School Board regarding the needs and vision of the SRISD Police Department.”
