UIL releases additional guidelines

Following its announcement regarding the start of sports for high school in Texas, the University Interscholastic League said in a statement that stadiums will be limited to 50 percent of its full capacity. The UIL said bands, drill teams, cheerleaders, and other participants will count towards the capacity.

Furthermore, the guidelines require every other row of bleachers in the stands to be vacant, and each group of fans must be at least six feet apart. Wearing a mask is required for everyone in the stands including fans and stadium workers. In addition to this, stadium workers must disinfect all common areas in the parameters before each activity or game, and the workers are mandated to follow different cleanliness procedures and requirements to operate concession stands.

Last Tuesday, the UIL recently announced its updated activity schedule and COVID-19 guidelines in accordance with the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Texas high schools falling in classes 1A through 4A will begin on time, with football and volleyball teams beginning practices Monday. Volleyball teams in this category can begin regular-season preparation on Monday, Aug. 10, while football teams can do the same beginning on Thursday, Aug. 27. Cross Country and tennis teams can start their seasons on Monday, Aug. 17.

Meanwhile, high schools near the metro area, mostly schools Classes 5A and 6A, will be delayed in resuming UIL activities. High school volleyball and football teams in this category can begin holding practices on Monday, Sept. 7, and tennis and cross country teams are permitted to begin regular-season competition on the same day. On Monday, Sept. 14, volleyball teams can gear up for the regular season, while Thursday, Sept. 24 gives football teams the green light for the beginning of the season.

UIL marching band meets will take place on Monday, Sept. 7, Thursday, Dec. 3, Thursday, Dec. 10, and Saturday, Dec. 12. These dates cover the following events in sequential order: the first day to begin practice, the region contest deadline (2A, 4A, 6A), area contest deadline (2A, 4A, 6A) and region contest deadline (1A, 3A, 5A), and the area contest deadline (3A, 5A). The state championships will be held in December with an official state schedule to be announced.
